Friday nights at The Hero's Edge Collectibles has been a blast lately. Looking at the new brews that people bring out and the new looks at the older brews lead to decks with some fine tweaks to reinvigorate Friday Night Standards. As a person that loves Dragons, the variations on this deck has proven to be a force to be reckoned with. The addition of Goblin Instigator and Goblin Trashmaster, the tribal Red Goblins is back. Zombies have been on the minds of many but with Liliana, Untouched by Death and Death Baron's return to standard, the undead will rise again. Mono White gets some new toys in Ajani, Adversary of Tyrants and Resplendent Angel to pile in for a ton of damage. Now lets take a look at some of the decks that you can bring to your local Game Store and nab a few wins at FNM.
First let's talk about Dragons, the big flying menace that control the skies. Dragons come in many shapes and sizes ranging from big to bigger. The early game can be dealt with removal and card filtration with the aid of Sarkhan, Fireblood, but the real threat is the massive flyers that put many aerial opponents to shame. The best addition to the Dragon arsenal is the Demanding Dragon. This 5 mana 5/5 monster in the air has a sweet enter ability, an opponent will take 5 damage unless they sacrifice a creature. Most variations of dragons will be playing Red and Black so removal in there in spades. Against control decks if the Dragon lands they're taking 5. Usually they'll wait until the creature hits but in this case he has already done his damage. Clearing the way for Demanding dragon is pretty easy with the help of Glorybringer and spells like Unlicensed Disintegration and Fatal Push.
The card advantage for this deck comes in the form of Planeswalkers like Sarkhan and Chandra, Torch of Defiance as well as the new artifact in Dragon's Hoard, a mana rock that get charge counters whenever a dragon enters the battlefield, then can draw you cards. The terrors in the sky include Verix Bladewing and Lathliss, Dragon Queen and Vaevictis Asmadi, the Dire. Splashing many powerful dragon can be easily achieved through Sarkhan, Dragon Hoard, and Unclaimed Territory so Vaevictis, Darigaaz and Nicol Bolas are not to big of a stretch to play.
The Walking Dead have some new life in the form of Graveyard Marshal and the new Liliana. The dual purpose threat of Graveyard Marshal bringing the beats as well as generating more zombies, can provide some extra numbers to the horde. Diregraf Ghoul gives you another 1 drop to start applying pressure real quick with him and Dread Wanderer. The Lords are the next best part of this deck. Like the spirits from before, the Death Baron and Lord of the Accursed provide and added juice to have your zombie horde punch through the biggest of foes. Death baron will give them all deathtouch while the Lord of the Accursed can provide evasion with menace, giving you an avenue to creep passed an opponents defenses.
Liliana, Untouched by Death is the real heroine here. Providing some removal and keeping the flow of zombies into the graveyard for later use. Her "Ultimate" allows you to start recasting these undead warriors for round 2 making them the true Walking Dead. Don't forget that being in black you still have plenty of options for removal with Fatal Push and Vraska's Contempt to clear out any and all threats.
Goblins, goblins and more goblins. Core 19 set has brought us some fine tools to keep these little bundles of joy. Goblin Instigator brings a friend to join the fray. These extra goblins are great with Skirk Prospector to help turbo out Siege-Gang Commander and smash in with haste from Goblin Warchief and the Lord effect from Goblin Trashmaster[/c. Damage can pile on through the consistent threat of [c]Goblin Chainwhirler, killing off x/1's and providing a terror on the ground with First Strike. Being Mono Red, your removal spells can go straight to the face. Lightning strike and Shock still prove there worth in this new meta. Side boarding is pretty simple, just go big. Chandra, Torch of Defiance, Glorybringer, Abrade and Fight with Fire will be your best friends.
Hopefully these new decks will spark a new light in what decks you want to build.
